Soak the footwear in lukewarm detergent water before wash. Soaking the dirty shoes prior to machine-washing makes the stains easier to come off. Mix 1 teaspoon of detergent or fabric softener in a bucket of lukewarm water. Then, put the shoes in the bucket for 15-20 minutes.
    • Avoid adding too much detergent as it will be difficult to wash off. Add 1 teaspoon of cleaner to half a bucket of water for one pair of shoes.

    • You can soak the separated insole, laces and shoes in the same bucket.

Choose the gentle cycle setting. Non-leather shoe styles can be easily cleaned in a washing machine. Opt for a cold, gentle cycle. If the water temperature is a separate setting on your machine, choose cold. [3]

Cushion your shoes for the wash cycle. Washing shoes on their own in the machine is a noisy affair and the friction can damage them. Pad them up by putting heavy linen such as towels in the same wash. You can even put the shoes inside a pillowcase or a shoe bag before popping them in for a wash.
    • Knot the laces together and place them in the pillowcase before putting it in the washer. This will prevent the laces from getting stuck in the drainage holes and make it easier to find the correct pair.

    • Do not put your expensive or light-coloured linen for a wash along with grimy shoes.

Go for extra rinse mode. Residual detergent after the wash tends to discolour or stiffen the footwear. So, opt for an extra rinse to remove any soap residue.
    • If your machine does not have an extra rinse mode, place the shoes under running water to wash off the leftover detergent.
