How To Customize Your Converse Shoes

Add studs to the sides of your shoes. Choose the stud shapes you like and then lay them out in the pattern you want before putting them onto the body of the shoe.^[1]Grab a stud and then carefully push the stud spikes through the fabric of your shoe (outside to inside). Either use your fingernails or a pair of pliers to secure the stud by folding down the spike ends on the inside of the shoe. Repeat this process for all of the studs.^[2]

Splatter-paint white Converse shoes. If you've got white or cream solid-colored Converses, splatter-painting is a fun and easy way to customize them. Pick a color you really like, squirt it into a small bowl, and dip a paintbrush into the paint. Splatter the paint onto your shoes to add a creative contrast.^[3]

To do this with several different colors, just get separate bowls for each different paint color and rinse off the brush in between splatter-painting with each one.
Make sure to do this outside or on newspapers. Splatter-painting can quickly become messy.

Bleach your Converses. Put your shoes in a plastic storage tub to control where the bleach goes. Mix together three parts bleach and one part water and put the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray your shoes in a disorganized fashion with the mixture. Once they've dried, your shoes will have a slightly tie dyed look with patches of lighter tints of the original shoe color.^[4]

Bleach can be harmful if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes. Be careful while handling it and wear protective plastic gloves if you need to.

Use a sponge and paint to create a galaxy print. Put painter's tape all over the rubber sections of the shoes and then sponge paint the entire body of the shoe a solid royal blue color. Use another sponge to add in some light blue and lavender accents.

To add stars, put some white paint on a toothbrush and hold the toothbrush about 6 inches from the shoe (15.2 cm). Massage the bristles with your thumb so that small bits of white paint splatter onto the shoes.^[5]

Bedazzle your shoes with gems and glue. Pick out different rhinestones and gems that catch your eye and get fabric glue to attach them to the canvas areas and/or a stronger adhesive, such as E600, to attach them to the rubber areas. Make sure your shoes are clean and dry before starting. Then, apply glue to the gem backs and stick them on one by one.^[6]

Spray paint stencils on your shoes. Get a stencil of a pattern you like, such as flowers or polka dots. Then get one or two cans of spray paint in your favorite color(s) and spray paint over the stencil and onto the shoes.

You can make your own stencil at home by printing out a simple black image and cutting it out.
This typically works best on lighter shoe colors.^[7]

Add a fabric accent to the tongue. Remove the laces and cut a piece of fabric just slightly larger than the size of the tongue. Use a paintbrush to paint the tongue with decoupage, a craft paste that's used as glue and/or varnish. Apply and push down the fabric from the toe to the top of the tongue to ensure that you won't have any wrinkles.

You can also put some more decoupage on the outside edges of the fabric and fold them in and secure them to the underside of the tongue.
Once it's dry, you can put your laces back in.^[8]

Change out your shoe laces. This is a quick and easy way to customize your Converses that doesn't require much time or creative energy. You have a lot of different color options to chose from and you can even get shoelaces in a unique material, such as satin or lace.

This is a good option for you if you want to customize your shoes without altering them permanently.

Doodle on your shoes with paint pens. If you're good at painting or drawing, get some paint pens made for clothing and draw on your Converses. This works best if your shoes are a lighter color, such as white.

Glue glitter onto your Converses. Remove the laces and cover the canvas part of your Converses in fabric glue with a sponge or your fingers. Apply glue to the more difficult areas with a toothpick. Cover the canvas in a glitter of your choice. Let them dry for at least a day before you put the laces back in and wear them.
